A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
