The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document offers a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" policies represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual danger confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

The growing economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a genuine capital markets union, which caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under one set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
